Some Statistics or The Greatest Of All Divides

ALMOST HALF THE WORLD'S POPULATION, OR 2.8 BILLION PEOPLE, LIVE ON LESS THAN $2 A DAY. ONE IN SIX PEOPLE AROUND WORLD, OR ABOUT 1.1 BILLION, BARELY EXIST ON LESS THAN $1 A DAY. (WORLD BANK)

MORE THAN ONE BILLION PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO SAFE DRINKING WATER. (American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene)

IN THE UNITED STATES, APPROXIMATELY 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS EACH YEAR. (URBAN INSTITUTE)

EIGHT HUNDRED EIGHTY-FIVE MILLION PEOPLE WORLDWIDE ARE ILLITERATE. OF THAT NUMBER, TWO-THIRDS ARE WOMEN. (UNICEF)

SEVENTY PERCENT OF PEOPLE IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD HAVE NO ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY IN THEIR HOMES, HEALTH CLINICS, OR SCHOOLS. (SOLAR ELECTRIC LIGHT FUND)

And people often ask me why I don't like idea of corporate profitability as the only goal of a capitalistic institution. The answer is because there are more important things to work for in life than reckless gain at the cost of the rest of the world. And the true measure of a man is in his desire to bridge this gap, either by directly working towards this, or though some work, like works of art to somehow make the rest of civilization aware of such greatest of all divides in the known universe.

The above statistics are collected in a very good portal we must all be a part of: http://other90.cooperhewitt.org/
